Distributor Fly Weight spring question (9:25am)

Just pulled my distributor apart and see that the springs are nothing alike. should i stick a Mr.Gasket spring set on here or are they supposed to be 2 totally different springs. I have a Mr.Gasket set from another distributor, the one im going to use the reluctor from.

Wally, Is ther a large and small one? Did you ever see what they "come in" at? You can put the other ones in for a quicker advance.

theres a large one that doesnt look like it does anything, and a small one. I think i have it all coming in at like the 2500-2750 area...... but then again, my car was running spastic... I guess i could experiment, i just didnt want to pull it apart a bunch of times.....

Go for it, but make sure you listen for pinging at lower rpms and high loading.

Oh Tom, you're so optimistic...
I did, but i still had the issue of it stalling when hot. So, im changing the pickup coil to see if thats the culprit.

Did you play with the carb gaskets or anything? Sounds almost like a vac leak or something. Did it ver do this before you did the elec choke? When it stalls next time check and see if the choke closed or something?

I didnt mess around with the gaskets or anything, well, I had the top half of the carb apart but the gasket looked fine. um, the choke is definitely open all the way, and it did all start there in the first place. I couldnt find a leak so far.... replaced the vac caps on the ports
ba humbug.

the dist will have two totally different springs from the factory experimentation is not a bad thing but it may start to ping around 1800 rpm if the curve is too light

Chryco, that spring it i have has 2 of the same springs, you think i should just try switching out the big spring? That particular spring just kinds looks like it hangs loose until the weight is about halfway out and then it catches the pin....
I also plan on leaving the vac disconnected for now.

yeah that si the way the heavy spring works , it allows a fast curve at first & slows it down at the top , switching that spring will make the most difference

hmmmm... ok, I figured they should be equal so that it stays in balance. You would think if one was quicker than the other, it would throw it off. Maybe i will leave it and try to solve the current problem first. deal with that later maybe, im always jumping the gun.

the curve is created with the combined weight of both springs not one or the other
