727 r band pin leak

  My 727 has been leaking at the rear pivot pin o ring or rings? for 15 years. I last rebuilt it 20 years ago, then 25 and also 32 years ago. I never knew about the o rings., so the originals are still there.

  Question is, can i change these in car. A few tranny shops say yes, but one says no. My friend who had a tranny shop 40 years says yes. 
   
  Pull tailshaft, vb +pin, then use screwdriver to get rear band back seated right. How hard to seat the band laying on your back?

  Guy on moparts black rv his and good so far (1 week).  I tried that 15 years ago and didnt get it clean enough.

  Not ready yet to pull it and do it right. Starting to have second thoughts on 518 wont cut crossmember+ 200lbs pig.

You can leave the tail housing on and break the little tab off of it that holds the pin in,and then make a bracket to go under the housing bolt to hold it in. Or you can do what you said. You don't have to push the pin out all the way,just enough to get to the O ring/s (sometimes there is two) and it won't mess with the rear band.
You don't have to remove the valve body if you bend a small rod in a half circle to push the pin out,I use a 1/4 brake line and bend it with my tubing bender.

  Thanks Tactransman,  So you push the pin towards the rear just enough to change the orings, then push back in?

   My friend just sold his tranny shop after 50 something years. Its now being torn down for condos.I chickened out buying it in 82 for $94,000. What a mistake.

 He always said, smash the tab off, id say i dont mind taking the tshaft off, just smash it off. His guys would laugh , hes a hack. I was starting to pull the pin once, my dad says you dont take that out. Then he *****ed for years, that dodge pig crapping up my floor.
 
DODGE     stands for  drips oil, drips gas everywhere.

  If i do this over again, i might spend $500 for the f drum. I like my feet. Probably update to the larger 71 up bushing setup. And a better govenor. For now i should check psi tests. Did 500 miles with no kickdown linkagebreaking it in.

   I was stupid, well stupider back then.

   5 years ago, my tc aod linkage bushing rotted off 20 miles from home. I had no idea but knew to really baby it home in 3rd and let it cool off 3 times. Read up on it, got the brass bushing, adjusted the psi and changed filter and oil with conv. drain. It did have small aluminum specks and some clutch dust where before it was always spotless. It still runs perfect. I was ready to rebuild it but was to cheap to spend $60-80 on seal protecters. I always used feeler gauges on 727, t350 +400s

  For years after i always read a really good ford only tranny forum.

Yup,I have gotten many overhauls because of the rotted AOD TV linkage grommets. You are lucky that you didn't smoke the OD band.
