727 question
« on: August 22, 2008 - 11:11:37 AM »
I've had my car for well over a year now and since day one every time I start the car I have to wait around 20 seconds or so before it will engage in gear. I dont know if it makes a difference but it is a built 727 torqueflite with a reverse valve body and a 4000 stall. I was told this was normal but thought I would check anyways.

If you're letting it sit a while between driving sessions (like 1-2 weeks) then the tranny fluid is draining out of the torque converter; I have this happen all the time. With TFs the fluid pump isn't driven in park, so I start the car and let it warm up in neutral to get the fluid pressure built up.

You may be low of fluid, I just checked the manual & it confirms what I just learned from experience with our Dakota.....Check fluid level with motor running & transmission in Neutral...I've always heard that but I thought Park & Neutral were the same & they apparently are not, as the Dakota kept slipping until I did the homework & finally got enough fluid in it.

As I understand it ...not much pumpin' in park!  Niiki's torq is already low in 3-4 days! (not totally tho...) I just put it in "N" for a little bit and were ready to go!  :smokin:

You definitely should follow the instructions for checking tranny fluid, warm and in neutral.  Terry can set me straight on this if I'm wrong, but I think it'll read high if you check it in park because of too much fluid in the pan instead of in the converter.
