How much water should a water pump pump?

Hi guys,

Now that is summer, my overheating problems are back. 

I went out on a couple of relatively cool day here (85-95), and this is what happens:  I take off, and the thermostat goes pretty fast to about 190.  Then, I see the thermostat open up, and there's a big drop, down to like 160.  Then, as long as I keep moving, it goes to 190, and stays there pretty consistently.  (Its a 180 thermostat, so I'm assuming that's it open state)

Then, it will start really slowly inching up.  Its really slow when moving, but worse when at at stop light.  It does this up to 210.  Its steady when moving at 210, but at a stop light it will go from 210 to 225, in the time for one light.  Then, as soon as I start moving again, it goes back to 210.  And, its not like I'm getting fresh air on the highway -- this is in between lights.

Anyway -- the real question:  I got home, and I opened the radiator cap, and I don't really see a real strong flow.  Shouldn't I be able to?  My 440 has a water pump from a 400 (so the port was on the correct side) and has a larger pulley than was originally on it.  (so its turning slower)   Maybe I should try revving it between lights.  Of course, it also sucks that even in motion its sitting at 210.

Just put in a new fan shroud and I'm using a different fan, it has a new 3 core 26" radiator, and the timing is right. (12).  I replaced the thermostat, but its a cheapy 180 from autozone.

Thinking about trying a different thermostat and water pump.

You could try installing a 8 vane A/C pump or the Milodon or Eddy High flow pump to increase flow

210 isn't bad but since it is nching up from there get the Eddy or Milodon.
How is your 440 built, stock? Performance? High Performance? Full effort? This info could help. You could also try an electric pusher fan in addition to a flex fan.
Your situation isn't the worst I've heard of but if it is going up 15 degrees in the coarse of a traffic light then you do need to add some components to combat the rise in heat.

Why not put a standard pulley on to get the pump turning faster.

Describe your pulley system to us   It sure sounds like you have some type of other issue going on. Also, is that a NEW thermal fan clutch on your fan? Are you installing new stuff, or swapping stuff? If you run rich, it will wanna run hot. If you run retarted on the timing it will wanna run hot. If your water pump housing back is worn out it will not get good flow. If your block is all crudded up behind the freeze plugs, it will run hot. If the heads are plugged with crud behind the freeze plugs it will run hot. If you have a blown head gasket in between the 2 cylinders, it will run hot and you may not notice the compression loss. If your exhaust is restrictive, it will run hot.

Lots of ways to run hot huh?  See if you can check all these off of your list
