Barracuda Drag Car - Help decoding VIN
« on: July 23, 2008 - 11:24:39 PM »
I want to take my car back to street legal. I have a bill of sale and no title. Can I get a VIN number from the radiator support? The engine and transmission are not original to the car. The number is hard to read but it is

84 198607 8
or
B4 198607 8

Can anyone help me?

B4 is a 1974 year built in Hamtramck and the 198607 is your VIN number :2thumbs:
1970 Barracuda   (O^--^===|===^--^O)
1971 Barracuda   (O O {]{]{]|[}[}[} O O)

So here is the million dollar question?  Can I get a full VIN number so I can get a bonded title for it?

The car has disk brakes up front and a rallye stripe (don't know if that is original or not) but pretty much everthing else has been removed or altered.

Maybe a few guesses as to what the VIN would be?

Also was an automatic because the floorboard still has the console bracket and the hole for the linkage to go through.

 :iagree: But it will be hard to determine whether it was a 'Cuda or Barracuda and what engine it came with without some proof of a VIN tag or a sticker on the inside of the drivers door or a fender tag or a build sheet with in the car somewhere :dunno: :2thumbs:

No.  Not with the little info you have.  Also B4  And 4B  , You cant change them around.  You may find a way to trace the last owner for the last registration to get more info on the car. But you are real close to a dead end as of now.

thanks everyone. I am going to call the local tax office and see if they can run a couple VIN's for me. If they come up then I can go from there. I can have the title company try and run a couple of them. I don't really car if it's a Cuda or a Barracuda, I just want to know I have a title and can get it street legal...in fact. I would hope that it was a Barracuda so then didn't cut up a nice car!

If you apply for a state issued VIN number, your state will contact the FBI and THEY will tell the state what the full VIN was based on your body numbers.

No need to guess.  :thumbsup:

Do you know if the state issued VIN will be the same as the original VIN number?  I don't know how I feel about getting a title with a Non original VIN number.  Is that my only option?  Has anyone ever done this?

Alaskan_TA - Do you have build sheets for B bodies too?  I'd like to see if there is one for my dad's 74 Charger.  It is a two tag car but the 2nd tag is missing..

The ones I have seen do have the original VIN number with a state code for the state assigning the replacement VIN tag. It is the only legal option.

All the records I have, including those for 1974 cars can be found here, just look for your VIN;

http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/found.shtml

There will be a major update in a week or two, I am still sorting through hundreds of records that will be added ASAP.
