Interesting carb observations

I realize that most of us are using holly and edelbrock carbs as replacements, but check out the sizes of carbs that Mopar used back in the day  :wow:

this is the battle I have constantly , everyone wants to puut a 750 on a 440 , the 340 used 900 CFM 6 pack no problem

Then why did 318's only come with 285cfm yet I have a 650 on my 318 now?

My other question is this - these appear to be 1978 configurations.  Were the larger carburetors used in conjunction with egr's and PCV valves?  Was it also in attempt to lean motors out to reduce emissions?  I'd be interested to see what carbs were used in the late 60's/early 70's.

carb technology was growing , in the 50s there were a lot of multiple carb systems due to limited availability of carb & generally smaller carb designs , in around 69 Holley made a 950 CFM 3 bbl to get max flow from the smaller body design , about 1 year later they just made the bigger Dominator series carbs to flow more air . The Hemi used 2 of the worst carbs produced with the AFB small throat carbs , it made far more power with virtually any other carb system , it would have benefitted with at least 2 AVS carbs & especially the 6 pack .
 the TQ was created around 71 or it would have been used on more of the muscle cars but they were all but gone by the timne the TQ was built

You'll notice that most of the fastest Mopes in relation to their indexes running in NHRA drag racing in the Stock & Super Stock classes have the Thermoquad carbs.
The older ones with the AVS's & AFB's are much less competitive. The TQ's are great carbs if you know how to set them up, and they can even get good mileage if you can keep your foot out of the secondaries. Pretty hard to do because they really howl. I actually got pulled over by a cop once because he thought the carb noise from my TQ was from the mufflers and he heard me coming a half mile up the road. He told me to rev the motor and he looked confused when the car was quiet.  :clueless: They scare people because they look funny.
Once we had Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope & Johnny Cash. Now we have Obama, No Hope and No Cash!
