Radio - Hook up
« on: August 18, 2008 - 08:45:28 PM »
Hello everyone!

I am looking for you advice on connecting my aftermarket radio.  First, I need to give you some background information.  The radio was previously installed by splicing into the red wire of the dash harness that runs to the "misc" position in the fuse panel below the dash.  Here in lies the problem.  I just installed a new dash harness in my 71 Challenger and I REALLY DO NOT want to splice into the wiring of my wiring harness especially since it set me back 600 big ones.  So I am looking for alternative ways to hook into the "misc" position of the fuse panel.  Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks for the help!

if you need power, your fuse box should have a aux spot to hook to, you will need the appropriate connector that should just slide onto the pin.

if you want post a pic and maybe I can see exactley what you are talking about.

I agree, there should be a "Battery and Aux" terminals on the fuse block somewhere.  The factory leads should be there as well for the switched source, no?

Pinkpanther, 72Challorange,

You guys hit it!!!  I just looked at the fuse panel and there are two slots with male terminals labeled batt and ACC.  I am assuming that I should run the wire to the ACC position which would supply power when the key is turned on.

Your thoughts?

Most new radios/stereos require both.

Tom

Usually yellow and red one is batt and the other is acc, to keep time/presets etc.

there are 2 other ways to do it
there are spade connectors that piggy back an extra spade lug that can be connected to the rear of the fuse block
also there are 3 triple plugs under the dash that use the bullet connectors , if I remeber right the yellow plug is constant power , the red plug is switched power & the orange is dash lights , all of these are there specifically to add accories or extra circuits ... too bad stereo installers never figure that out instead of just hacking into the harnesses

Chryco,

Thanks for the info!  Its funny you bring up the 3 triple plugs under the dash.  I remember them very well and I remember wondering what they were for.  I figured they were probably for the original radio....
I went ahead and ran the power to the ACC bay on the fuse box.  I tried it out today and it works great.
I appreciate everyones advice and help!!!

You guys are awesome.....
