Electric fans
« on: August 13, 2008 - 11:26:38 AM »
I have dual electric fans on my 340 and was debating on wiring them up to run at all times when the motor is running instead of on a themostat. Is there a down side to this or it really doesn't matter?

One propose of using the themostat is to keep fans running after car is shut off to help cool engine down quicker...

Close, not quite. Thermostats (I use a GM type TPI fan switch) works just like the engine's thermostat to keep the engine at the right temperatures, while not wasting juice or running the fan when it's not needed. You dont need the fan turning at 30mph or more. You don't need it when the engine is waring up... I use the fan switch and a 3 way switch. So that you can use it on "full on" if you want or need to, or toggle to switch controlled, or off. But the best way is to let the switch run it. The one I use closes (fans on) at 208°, and opens at 180°. It's made by TPS.

Thanks Moper
Is there a wiring diagram or instructions on how to do that. That sounds like more of what I need.

running a fan constantly is not a good idea , at faster speeds it will block air flow & can actually cause overheating

Shatar, sorry, I carry those in my head..lol. Between the relay(s), wire, and switches, I think the "system" costs about $50. You basically end up wiring the switched side of the relay so the ground side is one side of the 3-way, and the sensor on the engine is the ground on the other side. My toggles are open (not on) in the center position. It means much les wiring going back and forth, even to the relays. I could try and sketch one... but no promises on how good it might be to read...lol.

Shatar, You should add a Breather to the drivers side valve cover. :2cents:

There are many ways to wire the fans, some progressive fan controllers that vary the fan speed as well.

Tom :2thumbs:

BTW the engine looks killer!
