Roller lifters=low oil pressure??
« on: July 27, 2008 - 07:12:56 PM »
Well guys, I switched over to a hyd. roller cam setup(all Crane stuff) and now I have low oil pressure. This is in a stroker SB(416) with unbushed lifter bores. Has anyone here had any experience with Crane's roller lifters or this setup in general?  It also wouldn't prime quickly(with oil) when I used my drill and priming shaft. I've heard of the relief valve on the oil pump(MP high volume unit) hanging open but it was fine before I swapped cams. I'm currently running 10w-40 oil and when I change it I might try a 20w-50. I have to figure this out before I can drive it or rev it hard. Any thoughts, ideas or opinions??

any chance the roller lifters are un covering oil holes,  also have you hooked a mech oil gauge to check pressure,

That's what I'm concerned about. Crane says they have heard of no issues ::).

I'm running these lifters in a 408 with no problems.  I am running hollow pushrods with a Magnum top end though.  I assume you changed to cam out while doing this swap.  Isn't there oil passages that get blocked off by the cam retaining plate or by plugs on the front of the block?  Perhaps there is an issue here.

I double checked all this stuff when I swapped cams(motor has a 1,000 miles on it). I changed nothing as far as plugs and oil passages go so I'm thinkin' more along the lines of lifters. I think I'll try 20w-50 oil and if that doesn't help, I'll pull the pan and check the oil pump relief spring. Maybe from sitting for 4 months the relief spring could be stuck open?? Maybe a long shot, but it's possible. Thanks for the input, Matt.

I'm running the MP high volume pump. I'm not sure who makes it.
