help finding a trunk leak
« on: August 05, 2008 - 10:41:06 PM »
The other day after a storm, i opened the trunk to find water in it.  Short of locking myself in the trunk with a flashlight during the next storm, how can i find out where the leak is?

Lock yourself in the trunk with someone else spraying a garden hose through a spray nozzel.  Just make sure you have a good friend with keys or a tool to unlock the trunk from the inside.
I have done this and it worked.

I would assume it is the window seal without more information.

:iagree:

This is still the most reliable method I know of.  I don't fit in the trunk, but luckily my kids do.

Using some aersol deoderant and spraying it in possible leak areas will show you right where the water is entering.

One area to look is where the supports are where the trunk springs go into.  On my car, the part that was welded to the underside of the trunk lip by the dutchman panel had "unwelded" itself and made a pinhole leak on both sides.  I dabbed a little bit of clear silicone on each little hole and it seems to have fixed the problem.  Sorry if the description of where I'm talking about is a little vague...

If it isn't leaking from around the rear window, what kind of shape is the weather-stripping in around the trunk opening?

To check sealing of weatherstrips take a dollar bill and close it halfway in the trunk or door and pull it out.You should feel some resistance but not enough to tear the bill and if it`s too easy the gap needs to be tightened up.Keep checking every couple inches all the way around.

you could also try a bright shop light in the trunk and then look for light when it's dark out.

DO you have a vinyl roof?  Watch out for rust area along the bottom of the rear window that may be concealed by the vinyl roof.  :(

Locking some one in the trunk is the best method, give them a torch and spray a fine mist over the back window and around the tail lights, don't forget to let them out sometime or you won't find out where the leak is coming from.   :faint:

Just bring a flat screwdriver in there with you and let yourself out-it will fit right in the back of the lock.

My friend had an old caddy hearse with a plywood coffin he stole at the county prison he worked at. He finally dared me into the coffin. That fat 6foot 5 sat on the lid at least 10 minutes while it was halfway on the tailgate and half inside the back. Halloweens were always fun.

How bout a leaf blower too feel for leaks?

When my uncle died, a lifetime dodge dealer mechanic who worshiped 440's, his brothers got the hearse driver to give him his last few miles flat out. My parents asked where the heck did the hearse go?

She doesn't have a vinyl roof, will have to crawl in there and look around, with a screwdirver and light
