Ammeter bypass wire w/batt in trunk
« on: August 12, 2008 - 05:52:49 PM »
Have seen the threads on adding a wire from alternator straight to the battery, bypassing the factory ammeter. When the battery is in the trunk should I run a 8ga directly to battery or just over to the starter and hook it up with the pos bat cable there? :dunno:

I ran the wire from the alternator straight to the starter relay.  I also kept the original stock wire running to the ammeter via the firewall bulkhead connector but bypassed the ammeter.  This keeps the load running through the bulkhead connector at stock levels and allows me to run the new loads (fan, fuel pump) off of the new wiring.

Matt I also ran the new wire from the alt directly to the starter relay connection. Thats also where I draw power for my electric fans. The fans were working before I started the motor but right after It ran the fuses went and was just wondering if it got a surge of power from the alt and didnt like it?

Running a wire from the alternator to the starter relay would be the easy way to do it.   :2cents:

I don't know what might cause that.  Why would the fans be running before you started the motor?  Had the motor been running already?

I run a cable right from the battery in the trunk right to the starter.. then a wire from starter to the relay... then piggy back a fuse panel off the starter relay.... and add accesories there...  the red and black ammeter wire under the dash you just butt together and get rid of the ammeter all together :working:

I run my alt output straight to the battery in the trunk. But i have a 6ga wire from my alternator, so its a good sized one.

matt63: the fans are on a seperate switch and had them running prior to starting the motor up the first time.  Was just thinking all the extra amps from the alt ending up going directly to the fans?
stroker: where abouts under the dash are the red and black wires and what would happen if I just left them alone for now? The stock ammeter is kind of buried behind autometer gauges anyway and I'll just add a volt meter next year. :)
goodys: that was my next plan, but I only had 8ga to work with.

The two wires that were on the ammeter should be bolted together and wrapped very well with insulating electrical tape.

Any of the suggested locations are fine. Just make sure you have good circuit protection in that wire. I have a 100a circuit breaker that is in the trunk as well that it hooks up to.

I would assume you mean the alternator wire to the battery has the circuit breaker before the battery connection.  :bricks1:

Don't see why the extra length of cable to the battery would make a difference if all of the grounds are good especialy to the motor. The voltage should balance throughout the system, like when maintaining a remote trailer battery.

As for bypassing the ampmeter you only need to stop the charging flow across it for safety reasons. The black (alt) wire is the one that would be eliminated. When the black wire is relocated (to maintain the charging circuit), it definitly needs to be fused though.

IMO, ampmeter fires happen because the factory fusable link is on the battery side of the ampmeter, so an overload has to go through the meter first. Another "fusable link"??

I would just run to where the battery cable is connected or to the starter realy , the wiring from either of those points is more than adequate to carry the charging load
