440 or stroker 440 oil pump
« on: August 08, 2008 - 06:55:10 PM »
I am going to use my 68 440 to make a stroker engine out of or at least rebuild it to stock dimensions. I have heard 2 different suggestions relating to oil supply. One camp says to use a high volume pump, the other says to use a high pressure pump. I plan on using a stock oil pan with a windage tray so which one will get me where I need to go? I personally have always used high volume but a buddy insists that with a stock pan I run the risk of running the pan out of oil which is not good. What say you guys?

I use the high volume pump with a bigger pan, but the standard volume pump with a stock pan.  I once ran the Melling high volume pump with a stock pan and windage tray for a few years on a hot street car, and had only one problem when I did a "sustained burnout".  The oil pressure light came on just as the pressure switch shut the engine down.  It started back up without any problems (except bald tires).

on a stock pan I always use the HP pump , you will have no issues with enough oil; supply & will not empty the pan on a long pull

I learned my lesson with the infamous high volume pump/stock pan combo back in the 70's when I wasted some rod bearings in my 440 dart.

Thanks for the replies guys. CP what kind of pan do you suggest? I have always like the simplicity of using a stock pan but if there is something that will not sacrifice ground clearance and add oil capacity I am all ears.

I forgot to mention I have a girdle system also and still no clearance issues and allows for more oil.......   :working:

I do not have much for suggestions , the 6 qt hemi pan is about the best ,all other pans go deep not wide
Milodon has a wide circle track pan But it has to be installed once the engine is in the car , it will not go through the K frame , there were some older pans that had a tube through then for the steering centerlink to go through the pan , again a pain to install

The 6 quart hemi pan seems like the one I need. Stroker, what main girdle did you get and how much is it? I dont really think I need one since I am really just shooting for around 500-550 for a 440 and 550-600 for a stroked 440. Thanks for all the replies guys.
