Replicating e-body trunk seam sealer
« on: August 13, 2008 - 12:21:24 AM »
Has anyone tried to replicate the type of seam sealer used in the trunk and floor pans of e-body (and I'm sure other Mopes)? It would appear they had some sort of gun-applicator and weren't to picky! Thanks - and SORRY for the crappy pic, I just cropped it from something else...

That is what I've geneally used and what I bought for this project.  But- it is the specific texture I was more or less referring to. As you can see, it's not "brush-marked", but more like it was deposited by a low-pressure air device - as can be seen in the sealer at the very bottom of picture. I was on the Autobodystore.com site and a GREAT suggestion is made there: to use a Turkisk towel (basically a heavy terry-cloth), first dabbed in grease or something to avoid sticking, and to press it out to get that same "textured" look.

Here's the link - scroll to bottom: http://autobodystore.com/seamsealer.shtml

I'll be trying it this weekend and I'll post my results!

Does anybody have a good photo of the factory trunk seams they could post for e-tek?  I can't really see what you are trying to replicate from that first picture, but I don't think the factory stuff was as textured as you indicated. :clueless:

That's a crop from one of my pictures, but yes that is what the factory seam looks like on my 73 cuda.

from the trunk floor to the trunk extension seems..... I just used regular caulk, but it would be cool to replicate it.

Well if you guys don't mind listening to another old Dodge Main story,  I think I can tell you how the chalking was applied.  If I remember correctly it was applied with a low psi chaulking gun and then it was brushed it in.  I did this for a day or two.  This was how the it was done for the Aspens and Volares.  Maybe Barry (Alaskan TA) has an engineering sheet on that.  But anyways the photo that 71cudaguy or e-tek is of just the chaulking gun application and the guy with the brush missed it or was on break or ????.

my original caulk in my 70 is about 2" wide and looks like it was applied with a gun and then went over with a brush with some pressure and in one direction.
