I have an 8 3/4 sure grip question: I have the Mopar Performance Chassis book. On page #267 under "driveshafts and rear axles" it has a section entitled "How to test for proper axle installation and operation (for standard type no-spins). What do they mean by "Standard type no-spins"?? Are they talking about the sure-grip units?? If so, then I have a problem. It says:
1. Raise the rear axle from the floor so that the tires are completely free.
2. Place transmission in gear.
3. With an assistant on the other side, start test by rotating both wheels in a forward direction as far as possible (normally, both wheels will be stopped after rotating only a few inches).
4. With one person firmly holding the left wheel forward (against the stop), rotate the right wheel rearward while listening for regular indexing or clicking sound (the left wheel must be held firmly against the stop or right wheel will not disengage freely).
The steps repeat for rearward direction and for the wheel on the opposite side.
I tried it and can't get the opposite wheel to turn freely (disengage) when doing this procedure on either side. But I am not sure if this procedure is for a sure-grip unit!! I have an 8 3/4 742 case with 4:10 gearing and an (Auburn?) sure grip posi unit. Am I screwed up trying this??
I am having problems with my center section and tried this troubleshooting guide. That why I was wonderig if it was applicable to a posi unit. Thanks!!
