Leaky gasket on gooseneck
« on: September 11, 2008 - 06:48:55 PM »
Planning to take off my gooseneck and replace the gasket between it and the block as mine has developed small drip from time to time.
Just curious what you guys/gals are using for a sealant these days for the gasket and hose to gooseneck?  At the local parts store today I stared at a shelf of no less than 25 different kinds of sealants...   Confused on which would be best, I thought I would turn to the experts. ???
Thanks,
Blueglow

Are you talking about the gas tank filler tube?  When you say "the gasket between the gooseneck and block", I'm not sure what you mean.

In any event, there are many sealers out there, but only a few can handle gas, if that's your problem.

I'm guessing the water neck with the t stat.  I used a light coat of Ultra grey on the t stat housing and applied the gasket with the sticky side to the intake(SB), no problems so far.

Make sure it is flat(tstat housing) and that the bolts aren't too long.

And don't overtighten them either.

Yeah, water inlet and intake is what I should have said.  No gas involved.. just h2o and some anti-freeze...

Now I see the light.    :banghead:   :banghead:   :banghead:

Hey, the biggest problem here is where people go with chrome on their thermostat housing. I have been there, and done that.   :eek4:  It will leak, and the more you tighten it, the more it bends.   :stomp:

The original housing with a gasket and plain old ordinary RTV is what I'm useing now. No problems.   :bananasmi

Yep, Chrome is what I have....
Where could I obtain a factory one?  or one that won't leak?

All you have to do is sand the base and roughen up the chrome surface :2thumbs: or sand the base until the chrome is gone..........

Best way is tape the sand paper to a flat surface and rub the housing over the flat sand paper :2thumbs:

I think mine came from Carquest.  No chrome.

I went through the same thing.  Got an iron one from AutoZone or Advance (I forget) for $5 and it works perfectly.

I have a chrome one that leaked as well, I sanded it to make sure it was flat and used RTV (blue) with the gasket and it still leaked.  I tried it with just the sealant and no gasket and haven't had any problems since
