Electric Fans
« on: March 31, 2004 - 07:05:56 AM »
Hello everyone,

I will be changing over to electrical fans for my car soon and needed your input as to what CFM numbers I should be looking for.

The car in question is a 1970 440 Cuda with a 727 tranny with a shift kit in it.

The car will be driving mostly in around 78F weather, will a, let's say, 2900CFM fan do the job without overheating or should I look for bigger numbers?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Take care....

you can get a duel fan setup.

never seen this but i think it would be a good idea.....the idea of a single pusher and another single puller on the other side of the rad.  wire them seperately so if one fails for any reason, the other will still work, plus u get increased airflow.. maybe its an overkill but an idea.

Purplehaze,

Sorry that I can't give you any CFM numbers, but from what I have read on other posting boards, you should only use a puller fan.  The guys who have used electric fans have reported that the pusher fan (in front of the radiator) will restrict airflow into the radiator.

Personally, I have a puller fan wired to a toggle switch on the dash.  I still use the engine fan, but if things get a little too warm, flick*, there goes the electric fan for added cool.

I use a pusher fan on the front of the radiator - there was more clearance on the front side and I don't see any real air flow restrictions. Haven't run the car hard or long enough to see if there will be any overheating problems but I'll keep you posted.

i used to have an old elec puller fan, i would overheat in nyc traffic.  picked up a 19" flex fan w/ 1 inch spacer and no problems anymore.  dont know the CFM of the elec fan but i think it was pretty weak
