1999 Taurus Tranny problem

I have a 1999 Taurus.  Lately I have been having problems with the tranny, the main problem is sometimes the transmission will not shift from first to second and will just stay in first.  The speedometer doesn't work at that point and I have to turn the car off and keep trying to start it and get it to shift.  My fluid level is up to where its suppose to be and I also put Lucas Tranny fluid in there just to see if it would make a difference.


Any ideas?

But sounds to BIGS like you need a trans... seems we sell allot of these.

You say that the speedometer doesn't register when this is happening. Does the "check engine" light come on, also? I bet it is generating a code when this happens. If the transmission operates 100% normally at other times, it is possible that the vehicle speed sensor is failing. A check of the OBD codes would help in the diagnostic process.

You have a problem with the vehicle speed sensor,could be just a bad wire or connection. If the computer does not know how fast the car is going,it is not going to shift.

Hope it's not the trans model (AX4S) that has the one on top of the output housing between the exhaust manifold and the side of the block, those are a PITA to change. Make sure it's actually bad before just replacing it....if you can provide some info on the car I can get the test procedures for you...
Need the trans id from the tag that includes the paint codes, trim etc. (Different from the VIN number). Most of the time it is in the drivers door jam.

God dammit.  I just replaced it last night, one of my neighbors (has a blown Hemi '70 Challenger Pro-street car.  All I can say.....beast) is a professor in the automotive department at our local college and is very knowledgable.  He had made the same recommendation on replacing the sensor (which was $20) and took me 45 minutes.  So it has been replaced......and yes NTSTLG it was between the exhaust manifold and side of the block.  PITA

So it still doesn't work right? and the speedo still goes out at the same time?

Here is some info from a discussion that was on a transmission shop forum last month.Vehicle was a '99 Windstar.

If it has a cable it’s either the cable or the speed sensor at the trans has stripped where the cable goes.
If it doesn’t have a cable then it’s probably the PSOM in the cluster. Part of it is functioning but the part that moves the needle doesn’t. Remember the PSOM is what converts the raw analog signal from the speed sensor into a usable digital signal for the computer systems, so if you are getting correct speed data via the computer then the VSS through the PSOM is good, it’s just the internal component that’s left.  It’s all one unit built  with a speedometer facing.

 Another response:

The problem was missing fuse #35. I had no 12 volts to the b+ terminal in the back of IC. In the back of cluster you have a ground and 2 -12 volt terminals.
 


We've had a couple Taurus's that lost that power in the junction box, down under the dash. The fuse was good, but no power or intermittent power getting through. Rather than replacing the junction box, we just pulled the wire out of the box and installed an inline fuse and direct connection, to fix those.

Thanks fellas for all the help with this....

As of right now the problem occurs randomly and very seldom.  As of right now, it has been running well with no problems...knock on wood

Terry - the tranny has a cable with this system, but I opted out for just the sensor.  If I was losing power, would it affect anything else?


ntstlgl1970 - Right now the tranny is working fine, as I stated before so we will see

If it has a cable,then I assume that it (the speed sensor and housing) is on the end above the passenger side axle seal? if yes,then the gear is probably worn inside the transmission. If you remove the cover (here is a pic of a GM style that is similar) you will find a plastic gear inside. Is is probably worn.
