A833 or A833OD
« on: September 18, 2008 - 10:23:05 PM »
When I picked up my Challenger last year in America I bought a few extras, one was a A833 4 spd suitable for rebuilding. I also picked up the repair kit for it as well.
I opened up the box the other day and it is useless, even the rear extension housing is broken at the circlip/rear bearing area. My cheapest option is another box, I am now thinking of an A833OD box.
Can anyone tell me if the repair kit # TM294-B can be used on the A833OD box? or will I have to find the same box that I already have.
If the tornado's weren't coming when I was in Oklahoma I was going to pick up a couple of other boxes from a friends wrecking yard but, I had to pull them and they were saying get out now.    :working:
  Thanks in advance.

For what it offers I would go for the OD. Think about it, romping on it for short bursts or even the quarter mile will usually not get into 4th gear so why not get the advantage of lower cruising rpm's and the little bit of extra gas mileage it will give.

I know that Chryco in the past has been a fan of the A833OD.  And as far as making it down the 1/4 you just might make it into 4th with that tall 1st gear with the A833OD.

You'll probably need a new bellhousing too cause the input shaft bearing will be different (unless it's been swapped out).

This kit is for the large bearing A833 box, can it be used on an A833OD box or will I have to get another kit? now that I have to buy another box I am considering the OD box.

not sure on the part # but as long as it has the wide groove syncros & 2 308 brgs the rest of the parts will work

Do the OD trans.

If nothing more than gas mileage or freeway cruisability.

I just bought one for a hundred bucks, hard to go wrong with that! The gear spread is a little big, but that's only a racing problem really, on the street the tall first gear and the 4th OD are both pretty handy. :burnout:

Thanks all, it looks like the kit will work, all I have to do is find an OD box. I'm not in a hurry at the moment but just needed to know what would be possible.
Yes, I like the idea of an OD top gear without going to the expense of a 5 or 6 speed. My rear gear is I think a 3.23 so the taller gears will work out fine.   :2thumbs:   :burnout:
