HELP: Will 1978 through 1992 833 tranny swap into challenger?
« on: April 18, 2004 - 01:35:29 AM »
i've heard that any 1978 through 1992  4 speed 833 will swap into an ebody!  are they readily available, ie: junkyard? are they pricey (what is the average price)? is it a direct swap??? is there any fabricating that must be done? I have a smallblock with a console. will I have to mess with the console to get everything to fit?  What pedal assembly can i use? is it hard to hang the pedals? will i have to change my driveshaft....i have an 8 3/4 and a 904. can i use a pistol grip shifter with these 78-92 trannys? thanks!

the 833 OD is virtually a bolt in swap you need to drill holes to mount the shifter in the rear mount on the  tail shaft , you will need the larger slip yolk which should be there when you find the tranny , the driveshaft will need to be shortened , get the belhousing too if it is a V8 if not you will need a belhousing for a small block with a 4.80 or 5.25 " hole , & you will need to machine the front brg retainer down to 4.80 if the bel has a 4.80 hole
there isa a list in th earchives of everything you need to swap a 4 spd into an auto car & yes the pistol will work with the OD

the pedals are a bolt in , not difficult to change , Keisler has new Pedals , Brewers or Passon may have used sets
The console will work , but you neeed a different top plate as the pistol sits in a different place then the slapstick
I sell the ODs for $350 can , Prices Vary though

hey-
are the overdrives in good condition...
are they rebuilt?
does it come with bell-housing?
where are you...will you ship it and if so, how much?

will you take a built 904 (with less than 150 miles on it) with a transgo shift kit and new hughes converter (over $600 invested) as a trade for a complete 833 OD transmission and pedals?

what would i have to do with the console?? I don't want to cut into the top of the original console at all!!

I have a 70 318 with an 8 3/4.

I check the trannys over for visible internal damage , but I don`t disassemble them or test drive them , they do not come witha belhousing , when I find them they are often behind /6s & the bel will not work , I can ship it , $30 to crate it , I live north of Montana in Alberta, I have no use for the 904 & I never do automatics , The console doesn`t need much modification , just needs the bottom lip trimmed where the shifter boot sits , but you need a different top plate for the console , a friend was going to machine some on a CNC , not sure if he ever did but I can find out Pedals are tough to get , the have to come from a B or E body & If I had 10 sets I could sell 20 , there are the hardest piece to get for the swap
