Repro panel painting, strip it first?

Hi,

What is the current consensus on the factory coatings on the repro panels? Is it a good foundation for high build primer etc or should I strip it off and shoot two stage epoxy as a primer? I bought AMD deck filler panel which seems be powder coated or similar.

The old repro panels (atleast goodmark quarter skins I've used in the past) used to have those crappy paints on them to prevent rusting while stored at shelves, but are the new coatings good enough as a primer?

Those are E-coat primer.  It's applied in a solution bath, much like plating.  Five years ago when I worked in the automotive industry Ford and GM were moving to E-coat for all accessory brackets as a standard.  I'd leave it as is, primer over, then paint.

When the guy painted my R/T hood he said he was just going to scotchbrite it and then go straight on with primer.

leave it on, just sand with 320 and scuff the edges with brown scotch pad and it's ready for primer

Just be sure to sand it down to bare metal anywhere you need to weld.

If it's like most and needs some pounding done on it strip that area to bare metal, that junk they put on peels if the metal is worked at all.

 My painter had me strip all mine to steel where it was going to have color, like he said we know epoxy primer works and who knows how well the metal was preped in Tiwan before they coated it and what quality the coating is.  to each their own but it wasn't worth the chance to me.
