Replacing powersteering gear box
« on: September 30, 2008 - 10:23:58 AM »
My new firmfeel. Gear box came in yesterday. I'd like to put it in tomorrow. Does anyone have any words of wisdom on how to take it out and install the new one?

not to tough , headeers will make the job worse , you will need a pitman arm puller unless you got a new one with the box

well I got it done today. I need to grease the new idler arm. Also there seems to be a little play when I turn towards the right. Turning to the left seems fine. Any thoughts? I also replaced my torque converter today. At the end of all this I realized that I hate headers.

I went with the firm feel stage 2 and the fast ratio pitman arm. I also had to change the idler arm to match up with the new pitman arm. I like the two aloe better than the original but I also think that a 3 might be even better. I was going to go with steer and gear but they said it would be awhile before I would get it. Me being the impatient person that I am went and bought the firm feel unit. I will say that the firm feel guys were very nice and helped me everytime I gave them a call for help.

Does it happen at a stop?  If so, can you look at the components from under while someone else turns the wheel?  See if anything is loose or shifting.  Make sure the mounts on the K-frame are tight (they can crack and if you didn't clean the frame around where the box mounts you might miss it).  Idler arm mounts too, or the holes in the idler arm mount might have hogged out if the old one was loose or damaged.   Also, did you properly purge the system, using the method in the service manual (or perhaps instructions with the new box)?

Thanks for the help. I bolted the steering column too high and it was rubbing the firewall or the bracket by the firewall. well either way I got it fixed. Thanks again everything is now working great.

I had a steer and gear level 2 hated it.  Too loose.  This year I swapped it out for a Firm Feel stage 3.  Best change I have made.  Big difference.  Don't let anyone tell you 3 is too stiff.  It is perfect.  No play at all, very responsive.  Reminds me of my old 79 Trans Am.
