Removing the glue from under the vinyl top
« on: October 02, 2008 - 09:09:35 PM »
I took off the vinyl roof on my car this week and was wondering if anyone has an easy way to remove the glue. Just rubbing it seems to work but I'll wear the skin off my fingers before the roof is done. I tried some varsol and thinners but that just spreads it around into a sticky mess.      Any ideas??

If those do not work you could also try (carefully after checking for paint damage) WD-40 or Kroil penetrants; they can do a pretty good job on adhesives.

 :iagree: with using WD-40.

I resized your avatar so it can be seen without scroll bars.

I've used contact cement remover sold at hardware stores to remove vinyl flooring. The stuff I bought was powerful and easily removed the glue, but you need to be careful about the paint on the roof.

Ok here's what I found. I used a surface cleaner made by sikens (I'm sure other paint manufacturers have similar products) and after wiping it on with a cloth to soften it up I used a nylon pot scrubber pad. In 1/2 hour I cleaned around the window openings and 1/2 the roof.
The glue just clumps up and is easily vacumed.
By the way my paint guy wasn't too fond of the WD40 idea, something about residue in the seams mixing with paint prep.
