Timing Tape Install
« on: October 22, 2008 - 08:15:50 PM »
Any tips for installing timing tape?  I thought it would be easy, just get the car up on jacks and do it from the bottom.  K-member totally blocks access, with all the pulleys making it tough from the top.

Any advice?

At times I'm sort of a purist.  I might pull the pulley off since the access is so bad.  Have you checked the timing mark on the pulley to verify top dead center?  I would definately do this before applying your tape.  I've seen more than one pulley where the outer metal ring had rotated, thus throwing off the timing mark.  I then mark the outer and inner metal of the damper so I have a future reference in case of future question.  HOpe this helps.

My balancer has 3 grooves in it instead of one. So really make dure to check TDC!  :grinyes:

I haven't actually done this but I think it might just work.
With the balancer off put on the timing tape. Then spray clear spray laquer from a can on it. I've used these tapes before in the past and they always seem to come off sooner or later. With a clear coat over it, I would think it would be stuck on better so that the edges don't begin to eventually lift off and losing the tape. Think that would work?

or just make a second  notch in the damper at 2 3/8 " clockwise from TDC , that is 36* nnow the scale on the timing cover has enough range to adjust a few degees either way from there

I gave up on timing tape. Never stays on for long. I invested a few bucks in a dial back timing light.

I got it on, at least 1/4 of it.  Definitely couldn't get it the entire piece to wrap the all the way around.  I then coated the edges several times with some clear nail polish.  Hopefully this will keep it on for awhile.
