Goody - What's up with your torque converter?
« on: October 04, 2008 - 01:31:23 PM »
Saw your post in the weekend thread, what happened? And I thought you bought a good converter too?
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Hubs cracking is VERY common on a 904 converter, there are so small. That is one reason why I don't recommend building "race" 904 transmissions.

Sorry never saw this thread. The Dynamic is doing its job on a shelf in the garage, while a stocker is in the car for now. As Tact mentioned, apparently this is common. I was hoping a 240rwhp engine wouldn't tear the $650 "race" converter up, but I guess it's just in the design of a 904.

Makes one wonder how some manage to put 850hp+ through them and do mid 8's to low 9's.  :clueless:

I would recommend converting it to a "flats type" hub/pump instead of "slots" so it doesn't spread the converter hub. That is probably what SMR does also.

I saw the SMR truck run at Cecil County a few years ago and filmed it.

Also filmed Wes Leopold's mid 8 second Daytona. I talked to him in the pits and he had a spare 904 sitting right in his trailer. His car launches like a rocketship and it's just nasty  :grinyes: It's a 396 cube small block and it has W-9 heads and a single 4-bbl and he shifts it near 10,000rpm.

For a street car there isn't much difference what you use, but you're probably not gonna find a NHRA record holding small block stocker or super stocker that uses a 727. They all have the lighter weight 904 that uses less HP to operate. Of course they have some better parts inside, but so does every fast GM car that uses the Powerglide. Pretty much everything on them is replaced, including the case
