gas gauge reading not correct.....
« on: October 27, 2008 - 08:12:11 PM »
I have a new sending unit and just put 12 gallons in. There may have been 2 gallons in already, for a total of approx 16. THe gauge is reading just over half. I assume that I need to remove the sender and bend the float DOWN toward the ground so that it reads higher on the gauge. What would you start with, maybe .5"?

i have gone through 3 aftermarket senders and cant get any of them to read right, i have gotten them close, but then they drop unevenly.

Burrpenick - you are on the right track. Pay to take the sender out of the tank and wire a temporary ground to it so that you can manually operate it and have someone in the seat to watch the guage. You will have to sort of hold the sender outside the tank in its approximate location where it would sit in the tank then sorta guess where the float positions are to guess what the guage should read. Try marking some pen lines on the tank to figure out where 1/4, 1/2 etc is. I call this bush calibration but at least get the guage to be more accurate down low than up high as this will tell you when it is "pull out the wallet time". Good Luck

I'm not looking for perfection here, but would just like it to be closer. Was I right in thinking that I should bend the float down since its readying low? I'll go with .5" and see where it reads.

Yes bend the sender down to make it read higher. Remember anything above half a tank, fuel will spill out the sender opening when it is removed. :2cents:
