How much primer per panel
« on: November 01, 2008 - 10:32:16 AM »
This is probably based purely on experience but I have to ask to start somewhere. I will be epoxy priming most of the panels soon and trying to get a sense of how much a single panel takes to cover. I would assume a door on an e-body is about the same as a fender or quarter section. I would also assume a hood is about twice the size. Can we agree on this to start. Simply sizing panels relative to each other. So lets use a door as a base. How much would you use to lay down 2 coats of epoxy primer on a single door? Just the outside of it.
I am only trying to get a base appoximation. Don't want to mix a quart when I needed a pint. I hould be good to go once I start shooting each panel and seeing how much I use, but trying to get some info first shouldn't hurt.

a quart would probably cover both doors and fenders in and out,  if applied with a good quality spraygun.

Wow. that's pretty far with a quart. And i bought a gallon for the whole car. Probably have a bit more than i needed. Thanks for the tip. trying to get a feel for the amount I will need for each project.

I bought a quart of EV2 for my engine bay.  I put 3 good coats on it and still have a bit left for touch ups.
Maybe equal to 2 doors, valences, and some small stuff.  Mixed in a 8-1-1 ratio.

I`ve used about a gallon to cover inside outside and underside. still have a door a fender and the hood to do.  I`ve got a crap spraygun and I like thick layers...

you can not compare it to paint especially orange and yellow are pretty hard to get everything covered in.
Love your enginebay Tom,  I had to paint 5 layers to get it all covered, but the color I use is lighter than yours..

Curious if you guys used tinted primers before laying down a light color. Maybe that might save on the number of coats?
