made your own crank scraper?

i'm looking to make my own scraper and wondering if anyone has done this...anything to watch out for? i was reading an issue of my engine masters and they said 45thou clearance...sound right?

A crank scraper is a stationary piece of metal that is secured to the oil pan rail and is fitted with very close tolerance to the crank.  As the crank rotates past, the scraper interferes with crank windage and "peels" the excess oil off the crank shaft.  It does not touch the crank, unless you install it wrong  ;D

I think Mopar Action did an article on this a while back.  I'll see if I can locate.

Kinda.  Similar in purpose except that scrapers do not have a reputation for interfering with oil drain back.  Where a windage tray completely surrounds the bottom half of the crank, a scraper is a thin strip of metal, typically 10 or 12 ga that just fits the profile of the rotating assembly.  Looking for a website, but strugling to find anything decent.

doing a little further research, i have read that most say its not worth the time for a street/strip car... what do you have to say?

Crank scrapers are typically for the very serious.  Most people are fine with just buying a pan with a good windage tray and baffling.  If you're concerned about oil drainback, there are other things that can be done, i.e. epoxy in the lifter valley, etc.

Ishihara-Johnson scrapers...

They are not for all out, they work much better than a windage tray, but they do need to be fitted. Good info and tesimonials on this site. I tend to use trays because it's easier on me as the asembler, and the main return you get from the scraper you get a lot of from a tray... Scrapers can be rough to fit...lol. I used .045, but I've only used one before...
