Holley 80783
« on: November 07, 2008 - 10:15:04 AM »
Hi,
Don't want to start another Edelbrock vs. Holley war, but I'm thinking about replacing the 600 cfm. Edelbrock on my 73 340 Cuda with a 80783 Holley (model 4150, 650 cfm vac. secondary, 67 pri., 73 sec. jets). The Edelbrock works ok, but seems to run lean in the idle and transition circuits. I've tried tuning it with different rods and springs, but that hasn't helped very much.
I've had pretty good luck with a 3310 Holley on my 71 Challenger R/T. The jetting was good right out of the box and I only had to do some minor accelerator pump tuning. Based on this, I'm thinking that the 80783 may be a good choice for the Cuda.
Anyone have any real-world experience with this carb? How was this carb as far as gas mileage is concerned?

Sounds too small to me ,I have used a number of both the 82751 holley & the Proform series carbs with excellent results , the 3310 would be a good choice as well but they tend to not work as well as the newer series carbs
I have run into similar problems trying to get eddys to run without going lean somewhere as the metering rods offer limited choices

3310 would seem to be a nice choice, and it is fairly cheap as far as holley carbs go. I have had both and mechanical secondaries and me do not get along. I never seem to get it right and they drink gas much worse than vacuum secondaries imo. 600 is too small for a 340. I had a 650 on a stock 318 and it did a nice job.

Chryco,
I'd prefer a vacuum sec. carb, so the 3310 is preferable to me. Can you please explain what you mean about the 3310 tending to not work as well as the newer series carbs?

I'm running a Holley 0-82750 HP Street on my street 408 and it works nicely. (750 vacuum secondaries and no choke)

the internal metering etc is not as good as the newer Avenger / Hp series carbs , you can literally feel the power difference in the seat of the pants between a 4779 old series & a new 82751 , probably a 20 hp gain with no other changes

Has your 340 been modified or rebuilt?

Moper,
The motor is only mildly modified. It has headers, Edlebrock Performer intake, stock 586 heads and a fairly mild cam (it was in the car when I bought it and the previous owner couldn't tell me anything about it). If it's any help, at idle the motor pulls 14 in. Hg, which tells me that the cam is not too wild. So given this, do you have a carb recommendation?
Chryco mentions that the internal metering of the Avenger series carbs is better that the older series carbs, which makes me think that maybe a 670 Street Avenger may be ok?

I'd go with a 670 Street Avenger. I have a 770 thats going to go on my 340, but I've got it set up with a eddy performer RPM intake and heads, plus a hotter cam. Still, even on the bone stock 340 the mopar muscle built awhile back an 800 cfm eddy carb was worth + 35 hp, although I've been told eddy and holley rate their carbs differently (dry vs wet flow).

Keep in mind the Thermoquad used on the small blocks started at 800 CFM & worked fine

Just giving you crap Michele.  :grinyes: My guess is the jetting is too big, and you might need a different size accelerator pump squirter. Good luck with it. It really should do the job for you once you get it tuned.

MEK,

Well kenny got it tuned yesterday used a 50cc pump and a 42 squirter and the jets were not changed at all and adjusted the timing wow what a difference i really like it the way itis now.No stumbling like the six pack out of the whole. The sixppack was great at a high rpm but that is all.
