A518 Rebuild costs??
« on: November 08, 2008 - 09:01:54 PM »
Anyone here ever had to have an A518 trans rebuilt?  My Ram Charger's went and I have found most places want over a thousand bucks for an exchange.  I did find one place that sells them for $695 and that still seems like a lot to me.  Don't want to take a chance on a junk yard unit and the ones that interchange with my '92 are few and far between.

Around $1000 is a normal price for a 518 rebuild. BEWARE of anything too cheap! The earlier ones (like what you have) are really bad about burning up the OD planet gears due to a lack of lube. (there is an update to fix it)

There is no way anyone can overhaul one correctly for $695 if the OD gears are smoked. They can't rebuild and replace everything for that price.  :grinno:

tactransman - thanks for the advice!  I guess I'll either be biting the bullet and spending over a grand on the truck or junking it.

My 93 RamCharger has the A518 as well, I've been quoted around 1200 as well.  My truck is a rusted hulk for now.

What kind of shape is your RC in?

Body wise mine is in great shape.  Not a speck of rust.  The engine runs good but seems to have a rear main leak - Drips Oil, Drops Grease, Everywhere  :smilielol:  A/C quit on me in September as well.  That's one of the reasons I am hesitating to even fix the tranny.  I figure I've got to spend over 2 grand to get her back into good enogh condition for another year's worth of driving...

My RC has the 318 Magnum, 4x4, A518 and 203,000 miles, runs great, tranny is ok... for now.  But I'll be swapping bodies this spring to replace the rusted one on my truck.

Any pics of your RC?

I'll post some pics of it tomorrow (if I make it by the shop before dark).
