Weird symptom in 904
« on: November 11, 2008 - 10:11:15 PM »
Sometimes when the car hasn't fully warmed up the transmission will pop out of gear into neutral (and it doesn't seem to matter if the car is in 1st, 2nd or 3rd). I'll shift into neutral and back into drive and it goes back into gear. The fluid looks fine, doesn't smell burnt and is at the proper level. Any thoughts. The last car that I had this issue it occured when the transmission was low on fluid but this is not the case here.

Motor and transmission mounts in known good condition? I'd also check your shift linkage to make sure it is fully in the detent while in drive.

Motor mounts are brand new. I thought that it might be the linkage (and it still may be) but today when it happened I first tried to shift down into first from drive and it still stayed in neutral until I shifted into neutral and then back into drive. (if that makes sense)

I'd double check the linkage, I've had that jamb nut/bolt that holds the adjustment come loose and do funny things. I'm sure others will have ideas as well.

So you are saying that when it went to "neutral" you pulled it down to manual low and it still had no forward till you went to neutral then drive? Then when it warms up,it doesn't do it any more?

And you're 100% positive you aren't knocking it out of gear with your elbow?  :sly:

Pretty much has to be a piston seal or some other hydraulic issue internally. Need to put a gauge or gauges on it and see what the pressures are doing when it fails.

Well,it's not linkage. It sounds internal. Have you dropped the pan? If not,now is the time.  ;)
