Some questions for you paint guys?
« on: November 04, 2008 - 08:22:18 PM »
I tore down my cuda this spring for a paint job. Due to my current budget restraints I am doing all the prep work myself----having never done any bodywork before so I have a few questions. I am just going to get it primed and blocked and then find some one to do the base/cc. Due to a few setbacks this summer I will have to wait till spring to shoot the base coat. I am using all PPG primer and paint.  At this point in time I have put on 2 coats of DP50LF epoxy primer over bear metal followed by 2 coats of NCP271 high build primer. Now for my questions.  Since I have to leave it till spring is this a good point to stop---with the build primer unsanded or should I start block sanding these coats now and then leave it for a few months  with the idea of doing a light sanding / another coat of primer and blocking before doing the base coat.  Was wondering if this primer gets harder to sand over time or does it stay about the same.  After quide coating what grit paper should I start block sanding  with?  As it sits over the winter would you  cover everything with a tarp. Will the cold (moisture) be a problem if left setting  uncovered.  Thanks for any info or suggestions you    guys can give me.     Doug

just let it sit unsanded, once it's kicked it's the same if you left it a few days or a year.

I used both those products recently.    No expert...  But I think you'd be fine. Keep it covered.Don't let water sit on it. :2cents: :dunno:

I've found that the longer high build primer sits the better it sands and there's less chance of shrinkage when it's sanded for the topcoat.

don't sand it till you're ready to start prepping for paint,as it been said before, most primers usually sand better if you wait, if you're leaving it in garage, just throw a car cover on it,DO NOT leave the car outside, some primers can absorb moisture if left exposed in weather, dew ,condensation, sun will break it down, since primers do not have UV protectants like topcoats

most bodymen start blocking with 180 grit, I usually start with 120,since the primer I use is very high build,so there is plenty of it to work with,I finish with 320-400,or 600 depending on the color, since light metallics are not as forgiving as darker or solid colors and will show sandscratches, especially with watered down PPG paint

good luck

What you have done (according to my painter) is correct but most importantly - you have to take all of that primer and filler off when you start the project again and apply it fresh. That is because those primers and fillers are notorious for absorbing moisture and that is what you do not want under your beautiful new paint job.
Ever see a guy driving around with a primer covered vehicle (even in the dry weather) and notice after a while it gets rusty looking?? Guess what causes the rust?

if the car stays in dry place with a car cover, there is no need to remove any of the applied primer, not all primers are prone to water absorbtion, especially when they are catalized

Sun light will do the most damage to untop coated primer. As long as it is kept resonably dry you should be fine. The NCP 271 will protect it (unsanded) for your needs. While not ideal you should have no problems.

Thanks for the replies guys. It will be tucked away in my garage till early spring.  I am going to order a polishing kit from Eastwood and spend this winter getting all the chrome trim pieces looking good. At least I can do this inside where it's warm. I hate the cold.

:picture:Hey that is a great looking paint booth you got there. Looks just like the one i had in my garage this summer. Keep us updated on your progress, as i am in a similar stage and asking all the same questions. Let me know how you like that Eastwood polishing gear? I have mine in Dp primer as well and have just a wee bit more metal repair to do this winter. You going to paint it yourself, in your garage? What part of Boise you live in? I drive through there a a bit, may have to stop by and see how a real restorer does it.  :2thumbs:
