Help guys, what is this?
« on: November 15, 2008 - 07:35:31 PM »
Hello all, i just bought a 74 Cuda 318 car and found this under the dash? None of the dash lights work but everything else looks and works fine. I suspect this to be the culprit.  My only other car is a 70 Chally....ive never seen this before...Help!

looked at the schematic & nothing looked different than a '73s dimmer/dash lamp circuit.....I'm guessing that's part of a seat belt interlock systems that was added in '74.

Do your dash lamps work if you hot wire them?....also they have to be mounted to be grounded, a mistake lots of folks make.

Can it be bypassed?

I am no expert -- but I have a '74 Challenger and according to my Service Manual, that looks like the "Interlock Unit" that has two connectors coming into it (a 9 wire or cavity and a 7 wire).    As noted, it is part of the '74 only interlocking seat belt system (I still have mine in my car, but I disconnected the switch)....      If any of the info in this manual can be helpful, let me know and I'll scan it for you (probably not if you are simply going to by-pass it).

Just curious -- does yours still have the "reset" switch on the driver's side fender wall - just above the battery (about 2 inch rectangle box with red "button."

on our 74 Monaco I disabled the interlock by unplugging the seat sensors

I did the same on my '74 Challenger -- left everything intact, just diconnected the under the seat pressure switches.

R/TSE:   By the way -- if you ever decide to sell or give away that underhood re-set switch, please keep me in mind.

Thanks

No problem, i plan on removing it. Just have to learn how first. The seat sensors are unplugged. I was more worried that the unit itself wasnt working because of the corrosion.

just find a 12V+ source to jump to a connector...just to test & eliminate the lights as the problem...your problem is probably a ground or the panel dimmer switch.
