Gas Donations...
« on: November 13, 2008 - 12:56:18 PM »
Posting in Neil's topic got me thinking...

As the newest "TOCCOT," I have delved deeper into my PayPal account than I previously knew possible.  I now know how the print-outs tabulate, my account limitations (of which there are few,) etc.

So here was my thought.

I will "SELL" gas vouchers in $20 increments.  I'll set up a page similar to the Calendar form, where people can donate gas, $20 at a time.  I might set it up where no one can donate more than 5 vouchers.

Then, we'll do a combination lottery/goodwill setup for people who are a bit down on their luck or have further distances to drive, and I will then send the vouchers (basically just send the money) to those members.

It'll be done non-profit - every dollar that comes in from club members will go back out to club members.  There will be a limit on how much donation you can receive, but it'll be adjusted based on your distance.  So one member might have a $60 "receiving" limit, whereas another might have $120.  Maybe it'll be a limit of say, 50% of what it would cost you.  Members would submit their zip code and mileage-per-gallon and I would calculate driving distance, average costs-per-gallon, etc - all with spreedsheets and such.

Member status wouldn't have anything to do with it, I don't think.  Well, maybe you need to be at least "active," say 50 posts or more.  While we'd all jump to help Neil or Al, etc, we should certainly show support to the "little guys," as well - Carlisle is fun for all, and new faces are just as worthy as the old ones.

What do you guys think?  I'd probably start the collections process as early as January - give plenty of time for a balance to build up and provide lots of aid.

By the way - this is for people going to Carlisle in 2009.  I should have made that clear...

Add-on thought - to ensure the money is used properly, money would actually be dispersed when the member arrives at Carlisle.  So you have to get there on your own, but we'll help you get home.  :)

I already did up a mock spreadsheet - actually works really good.  I wouldn't have to do $20 increments - just donate what you can, and every qualified applicant would receive some amount of money.

No reason that couldn't be accomodated, though you'd throw off the curve substantially...  But still, aid is aid!

Can we go to Carlisle now while gas is cheap?  I remember paying $4.19 a gallon for 93 octane last year up there.   :pullinghair:

Just don't let my brother pump for you, I'll joke about putting cheap gas in and he will take you serious  :crying:
