Dash cap & door panel help needed!
« on: November 09, 2008 - 09:13:19 PM »
Hey guys, I'm doing the Chilly Challlenger & the next big items I need some help on are the dash and re-surfacing and painting the door and trim panels. Any help is appreciated!

Are there any good sources for redoing cracked dashed and/or installing dash caps? I got a Dash cap from YearOne and saw an article a while back on doing it, but can't find it now. I'm guessing I'll need to fix the original dash as good as possible first.  To reglue it to the metal base first, somehow level the cracks and fill with something? What would you fill that with? Is there some spray foam available that would harden and you could shape? As well, how best to get the edges to blend like they match?

Second - the door panels. In the YearOne book it says to check if the plastic is PVC or something else. Does that matter for spraying the surfacer and paint on - or just for fixing cracks? Anyone know how to fix a crack in those plastic door panels?

Thanks!

Does Ultimate Rides have a web site?  Google didn't find them readily. The two I found were both dealerships.

I've done both a $100 dash cap and a $500 dash pad on E-bodies, so I've had a little experience and know some of the problems.  If you go with a dash cap (our's was from Legendary), it can be pretty presentable, but making it look a little better than presentable involves some work.  For example, the cap didn't wrap all the way around the dash edge over the instruments, so I had to add a strip of metal on to the light bar to hold the edge down.  The A/C vents wanted to suck right through the openings because the holes were a little larger than they could have been.  The bottom edge of the cap doesn't wrap under the pad above the glove box and ashtray but just ends straight down, so you have to carefully glue it down tight without smearing the silicone adhesive all over the place.  Also, it's easier to put it in with the windshield out, but it certainly wouldn't be worth the risk of cracking a good windshield just to get it out of the way.  The major issue with the dash cap in my opinion is that it expands and gets very wavy if you park the car in the sun on a warm day.  It does go back close to the original form when cool, but it does warp.  To deal with the deep cracks, I just used a sharp utility knike and cut the curled up edges off so the cap could lay flat.  I didn't use a filler (but I have used that filler mentioned in the MM article on elastomeric bumper repair).
The pad is five times the cost, but once you've done it, the dash is taken care of, and you won't have to go back and redo it.  Doing the pad is not very difficult, if you're comfortable taking the instrument cluster out and reconnecting correctly.  I worked with an Ultimate Rides dash from AZ-Nick (on this web board).  There are some fit problems with the repro pads as well.   For example, the corners are a little rounded off where the pad meets the plastic bezels on either side of the instruments, and the pad was too fat on the right A-pillar so that molding had to be reshaped.
Your budget is your business, but if you can swing the dash pad rather than the cap, you will be much happier.  After all, Christmas is coming, so maybe Santa can help a little.

If you go with the dash cap make sure you get the top side of original pad as flat as you can or you will have a bad fitting pad and it will look awfull. I know because the Challenger I bought this past summer has one and it is awfull.
Another question is "Do you live in a HOT climate"? If you do you may want to think about the heat, The cap will eventually warp. I am not saying that it will tomorrow or the next day, but it will if it is sitting in the sun more often then not.
I sell them both, pads and caps and they both will work, but you need to determine what will for for you. I have customers with caps and they seem to do fine and there have been a handful that didn't, maybe they rushed the process to install it and cut a few corners and the result was not so good. Try to find pics of cars with caps and look at them and see if you like the look of them, they do look different because they are a little higher up and they may not quite cover the pad if you cut corners on the installation.

Sorry if i ranted on......  :blah: :blah: good luck

Thanks guys - VERY much appreciate your comments and expereince here. I have the cap, the dash is out (total resto), so I'm gona do the job right (as per article). I know you\re wondering why I don't get a dash pad on a total resto, but it's a 74 car, 318 and I hate going over what (any) car is worth. So it's choices like that.

I have a question about door panels and seat covers too - I'll start a new thread...

Unless Y1 has changed, they have sold the same product as mine, UR.
Only difference in the product I sell and Y1 is that I will NOT sell a fiberglass frame dash from UR, they are  :puke:
