Window transmission question.
« on: November 18, 2008 - 10:40:35 PM »
So now the fun begins. I hate tearing into 30 year old things. I am in the process of redoing the entire body of my car. I am into the doors at the moment. Bagging all all the parts and labling them ans all. So I pull the window transmissions out and i really don't care about them since I have another pair that I intend on using that I had bought from e-bay years ago. At least I think it was e-bay? Any way, the game starts with this there are two photos. the first are the two new transmissions that are going back into the car. They match. The second two are the two that came out of the car. They don't match. The one that matches the other two new ones has some teeth missing on the gear so when the window get close to the closing it skips teeth. The one on the bottom of the bottom picture is the different one. What year did this come from? I also noticed that the vertical track on one door is much wider than the other. Will post pictures if anyone thinks they may be on to something here. I also noticed that the sliders on the three that matched are circular wheels. the single one has some sort of square slider assembly.
Might be looking for a matching vertical track if anyone has a spare. Will also have a few spare tracks that I don't think I will be needing...
Any help would be much appreciated...

:dunno:  Gotta be a year thing...R/T Specialties sell both types... only in one case do they mention year model & that is on a kit .... I have a '73 that came with the round & my drivers door is a '70 model...I'll see if I can tell what's in there.

OK my replaced door that I think is a '70... has little bumps to fit trim on the upper front edge... does have rollers, I'm pretty sure I did not change out the mechanism but I probably did change the glass. the glass is the '73 if the #s mean anything they are the same as the quarter glass that is definitely OE.

round ssliders were defiantly later , I will never figure out why they changed so many parts
which vertical track is wider , the front with 2 sliders or the rear that overlaps ?

Thanks for the info. I wish i had more knowledge about the history of these doors. All i remember is they were real straight and I got them for 100 bucks back in 1990. The upper unit in the second pic was the driver mechanism. That is the one that is stripped. If you look closely at the teeth were the hole is in the gear late you can see how they get smoothed out. The front vertical guide is the one that is wider on the pass door. It is the one that gets bolted to a second piece that has two mount points through the bottom of the door.
I took a look at the glass for both doors:
The pass glass which has the wider track also has square sliders that are the same width as the track.
Driver glass has the thinner vertical guide has small circular guides that match that vertical track.
Now I have to make a decision. Keep them the way they are or pick one and get the matching vertical track for the other side? Have to say the pass side definitely worked better. But is probably form less use than design.

The glass is date coded, that will help identify which year is which.

Thanks. I will take a look. However the hardware (slides) look like they can interchange form glass to glass.

Hi,
Did you know that challengers and barracuda's used different regulators? If not you no now. I found out when tearing down my challenger it became apparent that the teeth rose above the door, and when I compared the two I noticed the difference in the lenght of the tracks teeth. When I compared them to set I had lying from a barracuda I knew the awnser.

Any chance that either set matches the bottom one in the bottom picture. It is the only one that doesn't match the other three. Wonder if that is a Challenge one? Have any pics on the units you hve so I can get a better idea I what you're referring to.
