Rear End confusion
« on: November 08, 2003 - 11:37:45 AM »
OK, I have 3 different cudas and 3 different rear ends.
Can anyone explaine what is what?

In the 74 the diff case says 2183 above 2881489. Has a tag that says 2.76. With both wheels of the ground, you can rotate either tire either direction and the other does not move. Does this indicate sure grip?
We want to change gears to 3.55 or 3.91 sure grip. Can we just change the ring and pinion? Or is it eaiser to just change the entire differential? Is this rear ok for a 440 engine with 3.55 or 3.91 gears?  Will any 8-3/4 diff fit into this rear?

In the 71 the diff case says 244 above 2070741. No ratio tag. With both wheels of the ground, you rotate one tire, the other goes the opposite direction. I assume this is open differential? Is there sure grip diffs for 741 cases?  Will a 489 sure grip work? Is this rear end strong enough for 440-6 pack 4 speed?

In the AAR the diff case says 2881489 above 30103. Looks very different than the other two cases. Very large and thick "rib" that the numbers are on at about 5:00 position looking toward the back of the car from in front of the diff.

The other two have smaller ribs and the 74 rib is even undercut. 71 and 74 have the small yoke. AAR has the large yoke.

So, will any 489 diff fit any of these rear ends? Are they all 8-3/4 rear ends?

One last question: How easy is it to pull the axles to swap the diff? How is it done?

Thanks

All # diffs are 8 3/4 diffs, to pull the axles you remove the drums & there are 5 bolts behind the axle flanges remove these & the axle will puu out , when reinstalling you need to adjust the end play to approx .010 , thewre is a threaded adjuster on 1 axle flange to do this
All 8 3/4 diffs can use the same sure grip units , the first 2 diffs are both open though, I woul dbuy a ring & pinion & have then installed in the 489 carrier & use a solid spacer with shims instead of a crush sleeve
The 741 case is the light duty /6 or 318 carrier, I would NOT recommend this for a 440

thanks cp,
I want all to be sure grips, so I guess I need to find a couple sure grip differentials. I may as well buy them with the gear ratio I want and not have to mess around.
Anybody got a decent 3.55 or 3.91 for sale resonable?

I have 4 complete 489 diff. cases with 2.76 gears,3.23 gears, 3.55 gears and 3.91 gears. Which one would be better for street use?

I guess it depends which street .... What do you want the car for ?
the 2.76 will givew you lots of top end speed but it will be slow off the line , the 3.91 are opposite the engine wiull be revving fairly high on th ehighway but it will be fum around town most peope use the 3.23 or .3.55 as a compromise

In the first question, you turn one wheel & the other does not turn;  You obviously have the trans in neutral, or a: the opposite wheel would turn opposite or b; neither would turn.  A posi will not turn at all if in gear w/ mt or park w/ at.   The 2nd question:  You do have trans in gear or park.  In both cases it is an open rear.    CP has the right scoop on the gears.  If you do much running on the highway at 60 mph or more, you will not want a 3.91 or 4.10 unless you have an OD trans.   I am faced w/ same dilemma w/ my Challenger.  It has a 3.91 limited slip which is great for around home fun, but not too good for travelling.  My plan is to install a 518 AOD & keep the 3.91.  Steve is debating on going to 3.91/4.10 & OD, or keeping his perfectly goo 727 & chg rear to 3.55 from 3.23.   Decisions, decisions.   Ovmf
