Help! Lower bearing on steeering column
« on: November 15, 2008 - 06:36:44 PM »
My 1970 'cuda, power steering, slap stick auto does not have a lower bearing on the steering column. Should i add one now that I'm restoring the steering column?

no , it was not supposed to be there , just bolt the column in place under the dash , the lower plate on the floor floats so center the inner shaft & outer  housing & tighten the bolt up

Ok, so it would not help to put one there for better support of the steering wheel? Most other mopars has one...

What we do hear in Australia is to fit a small strip of felting to the gap, just loosely, just snug enough not to fall out.  this will act as a support in a very minor way but will also keep all debris out of the shaft area itself, felt will hold its place and will not swell to cause any binding at all.      :2thumbs:

Believe it or not but I had a spare role of electricians tape that was used up the perfect amount to fit the outer dimension. The inner dimension of the role of tape fit the steering shaft perfect. I think I was getting some fumes in through there and was trying to cancel out any possible holes that were letting funes in the car. The thing slid it nice and snug and has been in there for about two years. And from the outside you cant tell what it is.
