Use that jumper to go from the battery to the side of the ballast that has 2 big wires on it and see if it stays running.

Like MEK said before, it could be your ignition switch.

should I leave the single wire hooked up to the ballast when I do this test?

The single wire is the one that comes from the ignition switch RUN side.  The 2 wire one bypasses the ballast resistor in START, and sending power right to the coil.

Hook your jumper right to the coil POSITIVE side to rule out the ballast resistor.

It should run longer that 5 seconds.

Jumped to battery and same result. Fired very briefly, then nothing it just cranks over. thanks for the suggestion, got any any other ideas.

Don't want to send you on a wild goose chase but if my choke pull off is not connected/working it will run for a few seconds & then die when it runs out of air.....worth looking at, maybe find a way to manually keep it open & see what the results are.

No!  please explain procedure and gap tollerance

bump the engine over until the point on the reluctor is lined up with the pick up coil & make sure the gap is around .008
 I have seen a few bad pick up coils so you may need to change yours out , you can test it with an Ohm meter , the resistance should be zero , if it is intermittent or the resistance becomes zero as it heats up the coil is bad

I would look carefully at the rotor. I have seen carbon tracks burn through to the shaft. When hot, the engine calls for more spark voltage, due to the heat, and the leaner than cold mixtures. The added spark requirement could lead to issues. Rotors are cheap and could save both time and other parts replacement.

Is it just me or does the coil post on the distributor cap in the pitcher look burned ?

Bump! Bump! Finally got back around to fixing the car, work and another child have stalled the fixing.  Problem has been solved, it was a bad fuel pump. I ( claimed in a previous post that I had gas, well yes I did because I was rocking the throttle by hand) After I had someone else turn the car over for me I noticed that I had no gas, a quick fuel pump change has solved the problem.  Now if I can figure out how to keep the car and afford to get my pilots license.
