904 stucked in Park
« on: November 16, 2008 - 03:14:22 PM »
My chally with the 904 get stucked in Park when it's under "load", I mean like an uphill or downhill street.
Since it works fine when the car stands straight it doesn't seems to be the linkage or?  :clueless:

In the late '80s, there were problems with the FWD transaxles getting stuck in "Park", and Chrysler released a revised park rod for them. I think there were some 904 issues as well, so there might be a revised rod for yours. The inexpensive fix is to use the parking brake always, and then the park rod never gets bound up. If there is no revised rod available for your transmission, it is likely just wear to the parking pawl and the park rod. A new rod shouls still fix the problem, or make it less irritating.

My ford pickup doesn't get stuck in park on a hill but it is hard to take out of park before I drive it so I always put the parking brake all the way on as far as I can push it BEFORE I put it in park. This lets the truck rest against the brakes and not the transmission. Then when you go to drive it put it D and take the brake off.

Putting the parking brake on should help alot. If people knew the size and "workings" of the park system on an automatic, they would ALWAYS use the parking brake!

I have had a few 904's do what yours is doing and changing the park rod and the piece in the tailhousing has always fixed them.

I sure do on any sort of incline. My parking brake isn't the absolute best, so I usually let the weight go on the front tire against the curb, parking brake, and in park. That little prawl isn't so reassuring!

Want to hear something really scary? The Superduty Ford trucks use a parking rod no bigger, on a 15,000 lb truck! I have told the drivers in our company repeatedly that the brake should be used, but I am as guilty as any for not using the parking brake. Reading the owner's manual on any car, you will see the same warnings, even in the '60s models: USE YOUR PARKING BRAKE! Always a good idea.

After checking a little bit moore it's not only under load, it's always. I had the car jacked up and disconected the shifter and shifter is working great
telling me it's the shaft you guys refer to. Where can I find it and what can I do with it to solve the problem?  :1zhelp:

This is another possibility but too expensive probably for a one time fix (you have to buy a reamer with it) Continuous movement and vibration
of the shift linkage causes wear to the valve body detent ball bore. The ball wedges in the bore and does not let the "rooster comb" click like it should.

The Dodge Rams have had a common problem of hard to get out of park and this is suppose to be the fix for it.

I have a friend that worked for the water company in Delaware and he was driving a Ford truck. Had it in park warming up in front of the building and it jumped into reverse all by itself and backed into a highway causing a 3 car pileup.
