Vin# on 4 speed trans?
« on: June 29, 2008 - 08:31:32 AM »
4 speed trans the pad with the #'s is very hard to read ,it appears to be double stamped this is what I think it reads out as,,,,,,,,   PP883  90275194,  its not a match to my vin# but was wondering if those #'s can tell us what year the tranny is and what body style it came from,  the tranny is a heavy spline hemi type and has dual shifter mounts  and currently is in a 70 Challenger..........

PP883 = 4-speed transmission; the number (9027 5194) ist not a part of the VIN, just a calendar date and a sequential serial number (xxxxth transmission built that day)
The VIN sequence is on the other side of the transmission.

For a 4-speed, the VIN is right above that number on trannies from the E-Body years.

9027 is way too high of a number though, so is 5194.

Can you post a photo of the numbers?

I'll see about a pic, but still I do not see any other #'s :clueless:,,,,,,,,,,,,   all I see is the raised machined pad that I describe and the #'s are deffinitly double or even triple stamped very hard to read...............

Anyone have a pic of the vin# on 4 speed tranny?

                thanks.........

tried a digi pic but camera will not do a close up,,,,,,,  cleaned the pad up to spotless but still can not read it but I am positive that its double stamp and clearest part  PP883 is stamped  three times in a row  like this  PP883     PP883     PP883 and then it has the bigger #'s stamped over the  2 of the PP883's and I still can not read what those #'s are and I did several pencil rubbings and do see 3 #'s that are in my sequents code but I also see several #'s that are not in my sequents code,,,,,,,,,,, so basicly I still have know idea what I have  here >:(,,,,,,,,,, only way to tell is get the tranny out in plain view and have a good look but thats not going to happen any time soon.........

   Thanks all :2thumbs:

For the Experts here,,,,,,,,,,   What would you call my tranny  #'s match or non#'s match?  The raised pad is so badly double stamped that its not readable as anything ledgable :banghead:,,,,,,,,,,,,, such a bummer too cause I think it is the original tranny , heavy spline  four speed  unfortunitly the motor is non#'s  and now with the tranny questionable it takes from the overall car........

Not my tranny here just trying to learn more  on tranny vin stampings.....   Which # in the pic is the vin?  I am thinking its the top left #, but why is there a letter in it?  Sould the vin # on tranny just be all numbers as in sequence number only?

The 1B 2974xx is the partial VIN on that one.

1 is 1971
B-is Hamtramck, MI assembly plant.
2974xx are the last six digitis of the VIN, but it looks like the last two numbers were poorly struck on that one.

Some 1968 & 1969 cars will have the whole VIN on the transmission, but only the last 8 digits starting with the 1970 model year.

 AlaskanT/A , Thanks  :2thumbs:.....

Am I correct to assume that a 70 Hamtrack Challenger should be 0B and the last 6 digits of the vin?

         Thanks :2thumbs: Rat
