rebuilt 383
« on: January 02, 2009 - 12:41:46 PM »
I have a chance to trade something for a rebuilt 383 with about 5000 miles on it with a 727 hooked to it.  The guy said it has about 400-450 hp.  Date on the block is Nov. 69.  He told me it needed a carb and a new torque converter.  I'm trading some wheels that I'm asking $700 for plus he wants an additional $200.  I think its worth it and I have no use for the wheels, so I'll probably do it, but just want to know how much this thing might be worth.  I think it would be a great addition to my 73 Challenger. :droolingbounce:

Yes, (if) the engine is rebuilt and there is no problems with it, it is worth the trade and $200.   I am curious how he diagnoses the 727 as the torque converter being bad.   Perhaps another potential problem with the trans.  With that being said, while the transmission is out of the car, it could be rebuilt reasonable or you could use the tranny out of your Challenger.  Still it seams like a reasonable deal for you.  (If) there is no engine problems.

He just told me that the torque converter wouldn't hold up to the hp of the engine.  Also I was going to have the tranny rebuilt just in case something was wrong with it.

Thanks for the replies.  The guy didn't want to take the time to get some machining and parts receipts from where he got the engine rebuilt, so I am not purchasing the engine.  He told me the engine in junk condition is worth more than my brand new never put on a vehicle set of 18's with tires.  So I told him to keep it.

I think you made the right choice.

:iagree: as well. That would be a major red flag. He should be happy to get the receipts if he had the work done. I'm sure the next person will ask for them as well or atleast they should.

Thats kind of what I thought.  Shouldn't be too hard to get a receipt from where you had the work done, even if you lost yours.

On the receipts i agree, I would find it insulting that a man wouldnt provide me with documentation.
