    70 Cuda manual to power brake change

    Hi,

    I am converting my manual brakes over to power and have a couple of questions.  First does anyone have a picture of a power brake firewall mounting plate, I think they are different, and second when the manual reinforcement plate is mounted to the firewall there are two studs that protrude from the firewall at the top of the plate.  What is the best way to get these out.

    the plate is different , it is attached to the booster , you will also need the linkage to increasepressure that bolts onto the booster before installing it , do not worry about removing the studs they can stay

    Thanks for the help.  I have confirmed that I have the correct plate and linkage, but I am still having problems.  The studs are still in the way.  Perhaps my booster is incorrect.  The part numbers on it are 18268 and 3 187B.  I have attached pictures. 

    Suggestions?

    the booster should slide into the lower 4 holes in the fiirewall , you will need the linkage that connects to the pedal Before installing the booster as well , none of my cars have power brakes so I can`t really take a picture for you

    Do you have the "double-swivel" linkage from the booster to pedal? I know this is not the correct term, but can't think of a better name for it.

    I have a setup out of a car...will try to get pics. Not sure on the stud issue, but I will find out when I do the swap myself!

    Thanks again, but the booster does not slip into those holes.  I'm doing something wrong, somewhere.

    I checked the link: http://www.autopart.com/BrakePowerBooster/BrakePowerBooster1970PLYMOUTHCUDA.htm and it confirms that my booster is correct.  So I think I am back to removing the studs.

    My backing plate and booster do not line up to the holes on the firewall, unless I remove the studs.  Then everything lines up.  I also have the correct “double swivel linkage”.  I would rather not have to take the studs out, as that would be difficult to do, and I just want to be sure that this is what I have to do before I do it. 

    Appreciate any help.  Pictures would be great.

    I believe there should be an extra plate mounted to the rear of the booster that you are missing , the studs go throught the pedal support & need to be there

    Chryco, he is correct. I just went out and checked my 70 Cuda and the top two studs on the booster go in the top two holes where those studs currently are.

    heminut is right on the money.

    Here are pics of a power brake firewall and the setup together out of the car. Just picture a firewall between the booster backing plate and the pedal bracket.

    Looks like those studs will have to go. Maybe you can spin two nouts on each stud, one near the top, one near the bottom, then wiggle the stud with a long socket & extension until it breaks off. Very crude, but should be effective.

    Ended up having to take the sub-frame for the brake pedal out of the car and grinding off the bolts.  They would not hammer out or twist off.  Actually not too difficult to do (with the seats out), just five small bolts, and a twisted neck.
