T/A space saver spare?
« on: December 23, 2008 - 01:11:36 PM »

 Whats up with the T/A space saver spare have seen them advertised for 1200 dollars :clueless:......

 Is the T/A spare just a T/A thing or is it the same as any 1970 space saver, and why are they 14 inch when the T/A had 15's??????

They can be expensive because a lot of folks tossed them out years ago.

They were used on other models as well.

As for your second question, to save trunk space.  ;)

Space savers were standard on any '70 E body.  The T/A one is not unique.
Early '70's got a different tire, most '70's had F78x14 space savers but early cars had a 7.75x14.
T/A's and AARs would have the F78x14.
Space savers do seem to bring high prices, as with anything they are worth what someone is willing to pay.
Be careful when searching for one, there were many similiar looking space savers supplied with various different cars in the '70's and many are pretty common, you don't want to pay big bucks for the incorrect wheel!  However, if you aren't going to national show level you can get a space saver pretty inexpensively that will look almost right and few would ever recognize it as being wrong.
They were 14's for all E bodies because they were just temporary tires to be used until you could get your tire fixed or replaced with a new one of the correct size.

As far as I know they were only standard on convertibles. They were a required option on any car with 15" wheels and available on any others.

I never realized that these were required with 15" wheels. How odd, considering these were 14" spares. Was this because a big 15" wheel/tire would take up a lot of trunk space or was it a money thing from the bean counters? Why not just have the standard full size 14"-er as standard equipment? No wonder they went bankrupt in the 70's!

Space - Saver spare tire trivia.

         Pick one;

The "Space -Saver" spare was named that because;

1. It saves trunk space.

2. It saves trunk space.

3. It saves trunk space.

That said, not only is it a 14" tire, but it was supplied with no air in it, but an inflator canister did come with it. Why?

 You guessed it, to save even more space. They were aptly named.
