Door Question...
« on: January 01, 2009 - 09:51:57 PM »
This seems like the right place to post this question...

Are there differences in convertible doors vs hard top doors?  (will doors off a convertible fit a hardtop?)

Is there a difference between the door glass between convertible and hardtop?  If so, how can you tell the difference.

Thanks in advance...

Doors are the same, glass is different.

the convertable & hardtop doors & glass are different , the glass is shaped differently to match the top & the doors have a spring loaded support at the rear of the door

I agree, I should have been more clear in my answer. The actual door structures are the same, the spring loaded support can be put on a hard top door.

To be clear, isn't the spring loaded support the "brass wedge" that is bolted on for convertible applications?

Yes the brass piece is in the body pillar or B pillar in this case and is spring loaded.  The plastic wedge is mounted on the door itself. :2thumbs:

I learn something here every day, never knew that!  What's the purpose, what could that possibly do?
I'm guessing it's supposed to keep the rear of the door up, even the hardtops could use that.  But does a brass shim and plastic guide really do anything?

The main reason they have these guides is to allow the door and body to flex with out actually binding up in the whole, you must realise that a convertible has much more flex through the body than a hardtop as they do not have a turret for the extra support.  A convertible does have an extra thick folded piece of steel in side of the rocker panels but it still needs these guides to help with the flexing problem, because they are spring loaded, they can adjust with the flex of the body.  Main reason would be to stop paint chips when panels meet, and a door can pop open under pressure if the body is twisted hard enough.  extreme cases or in an accident.

Just a little more to add that I found interesting. I went out and looked at a couple of doors that came off of a hardtop. There are actually two small dimples where the holes are suppose to be drilled if the doors were to have the plastic pieces for a convertible.
