Brand X Clutch ?
« on: January 06, 2009 - 07:34:30 PM »
Our '98 GT the other day made a high pitched noise that varied w/RPM all the way to & from Holly Pond... I figured it to be a bad belt, idler pulley or maybe an accessory bearing... Sat. I raised the hood & started...no noise. Drove a little way & the noise only happens when the clutch is depressed & the further it is pushed the louder it gets but made no noticeable noise with my foot off the pedal... Reading on the Internet they say a constant noise like I 1st experienced is a pilot bearing & noise only with pressure on the pedal is throwout bearing... Any clarifying ideas?

Sure sounds like a throw out bearing to me, the way you just described it

With a 98 it is more than likely you got a hyd. TO bearing. I thought they lasted for along time but recently I've had several aquaintences the had to replace them. I for one am going to just replace mine when I have to replace the clutch in my Jetta (it has 150K on it now). Maybe I'm just skeered but atleast I won't have to break it apart twice in the next 1XX,XXX miles.

Hope it's the throwout bearing as it seems the simplest to get to.... only 45K but I bet the boy rides with his foot on the clutch.....not that I ever do.  ::)
