Parts Inter-Change 318/904 to 340/727?
« on: January 14, 2009 - 11:43:13 PM »
Hi guys,

I have a 1970 Challenger with a 318/904 that I am going to pull out and install a 340/727.

Need to know which of these 318/904 parts are interchangeable/transferable over to the 340/727:

* 318 Water Pump
* 318 Power Steering Pump
* 318 Stock Exhaust Manifolds
* 318 Auto Accelerator Bracket
* 318 Alternator
* 318 Fuel Pump
* 318 Starter
* 318 Engine Mounts

* 904 Bell Housing
* 904 Fly Wheel

Any other parts on the 318/904 you can think of that will also transfer over nicely to the 340/727?

Thanks, Charlie

ps: any recommendations you can make of a publication/book I should read up on to gleam all of the info on a 318/904 to 340/727 swap?

All of those parts will interchange, but I would not use the 318 manifolds as they are really restrictive and probably smaller ports. and there is no removable bellhousing on the 904 or 727, but the bolt pattern is the same for the 2 as long as they are both small block transmissions. The accelerator bracket may need modification, but not sure.

It is a pretty straight forward swap.  As long as both are LA engines I do not see a problem.  Would have to agree on the exhaust manifolds they would have to be ported to be used.   The bracket may have to be switched for the Auto Accelerator Bracket for a 4bbl if that is what you are going to have on your car.  Everything else will interchange.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

Left engine mount is also different , it could be shimmed modified or replaced to solve the issue
 also the torque converter will not swap & depending what converter is used you may need a different flex plate to attach the 2 as there are 2 different diameters / bolt patterns

I believe the 727 is longer than the 904 also, and if so you will have to shorten the driveshaft.

Cooler lines are the same. The driveline is 4 inches shorter and the yoke is a different spline.

My dad is going to be putting 340 HP exhaust manifolds on his 318 and changing over to 340 heads.  Would he need to change the left motor mount also?  What is the reason for a different motor mount?

No he won't have to change. No idea why there is a difference.

 :iagree:
if he is not changng the block the mount doesn`t need to be changed either
 the left mount is different , only Mopar knows why
 the driveshaft & slip yolk will need to be changed as well as above have said
