Wipers Won't Retract All The Way
« on: February 07, 2009 - 12:58:40 AM »
I ran my wipers for the first time (new purchase of a 70 Challenger) and they seam to work just fine, except when I turn the switch off they stop at the bottom of the glass and won't retract all the way down.  2 questions: a. is there a quick fix b.  if no quick fix, is there a way to just press the wipers off and then reattach them in the stored position (I really don't need them at this point)?

Thanks, Charlie

Sometimes the wipers get stuck on the trim at the bottom. You can lift them and help back down to the seat. When the switch is turned to off position the motor should go to the retraction mode. Otherwise the motor (or switch?)maybe from another vehicle.

this is the typical problem for E body wipers , I treid the repair mine but ended up shipping it out to be repaired , if the wipers sit up for long periods of time the motor contiues to try to run & will burn out as it is only switched off when the wipers fully park or the key is turned off

I checked this further and the wipers stop at the exact point the switch is turned off (without retracting to home).  Does this mean I have a bad wiper switch or a bad wiper motor?  If it's the switch, I assume the removal & replacement is pretty simple, but if it is the wiper motor, are there any tricks to it's removal & replacement?

Thanks everyone.

If it is a variable speed motor, you can loosen (don't remove) the sheet metal screws around the flat disk on the front of the wiper gear box and rotate the disk a 1/4 inch at a time (I'm guessing CCW).  Then retighten and try it. Those notches on the edge are to position the wiper park switch (which is inside that disk where the soldered wires are) for different model Mopars.

........ and if the adjustment doesn't work then you have park switch problems most likely. Also get the numbers off the wiper motor and post them here. Someone will confirm if it is a proper 70 motor. There were many variations of mopar wipers. They look the same on the outside but don't work right. I tried quick fixes for mine and (sadly) ended up going the $300 route through Jules Daddio. Good for Jules though haha. Don't forget these parts are nearing 40 years in age. Seriously though .... the wipers always quit in the middle of a rain storm, not when you are simply trying to wash the windshield on a hot dusty day.

make sure the lower left hand screw is in the switch panel & tight it creates the ground , this can cause a problem
next check for power at the blue wire at the plug for the wiper motor , if it is powered the switch is fine & the wiper motor is the problem

I didn't read your second post very carefully.  As CP said, make sure things are grounded.  If either the motor or the switch is not grounded, the motor won't reverse to "park".
The switch has a little gear in it that rotates some contacts and reverses the current to park the wipers when you click the switch off.  This little gizmo in the switch sometimes get screwed up, and this could be the issue as well. Slotts, on this forum, works on these I think.
