Getting a yoke off a rear end
« on: January 28, 2009 - 08:15:24 PM »
This seems impossible.  One is on a truck, the other is on the ground with no tires on the rear end.  Can't seem to get anywhere.  Left does mean LOOSE does it not ??

Yes, regular right hand threads on those.  Left will take it off.  Those are really bad sometimes.  Have had  to use the 3/4" drive impact on some.

I might try a 1/2 drive impact (no 3/4). That's all I have.  One thing with using air, is that running a 100 foot air hose on the ice seems to kill my air tools. (they work like dog doo doo).

Crank up your pressure on your compressor

I have it set at 120 lbs max.  The cold air and condensation outside  :stomp:make these tools worthless in 20 Degree or colder weather.  :stomp:

the pinion nut torques to 275 ft lbs & rust makes it harder yet
which diff are you working on if ti is ai 489 with a crush sleeve mark the pinion & nut although if you are swapping yolks even that may not help , you have to get the crush back exactly or replace the crush sleeve

dana is no problem , no crush sleeve in there at least , getting it undone may be an issue

The nut is usually one with deformed threads (so it will stay tight) put on with loctite.  Along with rust and install torque make these difficult to remove.

I have used a long piece of pipe over my breaker bar, however if you only have a 1/2" drive you could shear off the end, & I use my foot on the bar for more leverage.

I used a 1/2 inch breaker bar and a long piece of pipe for leverage, it flexed heaps but finally came off.   I also jammed a clean cloth or rag in the gears to stop them from rotating. :2thumbs:

It took a impact to get that nut off.  I didn't  want to pull the cover off to stick a rag into the gears.  That would mean one more seal to fix. haha.
