73/74 Radiator overflow bottle fit on 70 cuda?
« on: January 28, 2009 - 06:00:08 AM »
Having some concerns about cooling on my 70 383 Barracuda with 22 inch radiator.  Radiator core was upgraded to high efficiency but looking to fit an overflow to provide a little bit of protection until I can decide on a full solution.

Will a 73/74 e-body overflow bottle (Year One part # BH182) fit on a 70 with 383 and power steer?  Do I require the mounting bracket (Year One part # BH200) to fit it or can it be mounted/screwed to radiator mounts (I've never seen one in a car)?  I was concerned that being for a 73/74 then it would be designed to clear a 318/360 and maybe not a 383?

Help appreciated, pictures would be great.  Cheers, Mark.

Ozcuda before you send off the order, go down to your friendly wrecker and pick up an over flow bottle from a CL or CM Valiant. They are large and can be adapted to fit on the inner fender, should be fairly cheap also. Possibly a Holden one will work also, if you need the correct one you can order it later after you know it works. The 22in radiator should handle the 383 if it is a 3 row core.   :2cents:

Thanks, will check out other options but looking for a new piece to match the rest of the engine bay.  Factory one would be prefereable if it is a neat fit and looks like it was meant to be there.  Alternatively, hidden could be good.

I'm pretty sure 70's didn't have overflow bottles, so you'll have to rig something up.

I used one from a Ford Festiva (I think) and mounted it on the grille side of the core support.  I'll post a picture tonight.

Found a pic of a 73/74 cuda fitted with an overflow bottle and it looks like the mounting bracket is required to position the bottle beside the battery and adjacent the radiator shroud (looks like Chrysler had to come up with something to fit the available space - certainly not a great design).

Given my radiator overflow is towards the passenger side of the car and I haven't used my washer bottle, I'm thinking that i can run the overflow into the bottom of the washer bottle and use it instead.  Looks factory, is on the right side and I'm not using it. Should work???

Make sure the hose goes to the bottom of the bottle, some cut a very small "V" in the bottom of the hose so it cannot stick to the bottom from suction when the radiator starts to cool. Buy a "Recovery" radiator cap, 15 - 18 lb's should be OK.   :2thumbs:

washer bottle outlet is right on the bottom so planning on running overflow to there (rather than down through the cap) so will always be the lowest point of the bottle anyway.

Just be careful, I don't know of any overflow bottle with a connection at the bottom, it would have to seal very well especially when hot.

I clamped the hose to the outlet of the washer bottle but heat and the hose coming away is something I hadn't considered.  Also not sure how much expansion I could get and possibly have overflow issues.  It's all hoohed up and looks good but without getting the car quite hot to check it, I'm not going to know whether it will work or I will have coolant everywhere?  Might have to think about this some more (have time as the fuel pump crapped out before I could take it for a run anyway  :'()
