You need one of these... It's the steering column adapter to put a rimblow, Tuff Wheel, E-body standard woodgrain or 72-74 E-body 2-spoke wheel on. It was used on 70-71 A and B-bodies and anything a Tuff Wheel was on. They are a couple inches shorter than the ribbed version you have. The downside is some people don't like the steering wheel so close to the dash. Let me know if you need, I have a few left.

A guy I know cut a section out of the can and re-welded it. It looks exactly they same now but just a little shorter.
I did the same thing. Just puts your hands a little close to the edge of the dash pad but gave me the room I needed. Now the wheel doesn't feel like its in my chest. Sectioned out a portion and welded the two halves back together. Tig welded. Never had anyone notice it.
